Configuring Vonage Companion®

Configuring Vonage Companion is quick and easy. You can control the way you work with your Vonage Companion by setting up your Preferences. These Preferences are settings that apply locally to the computer where you have downloaded and installed Vonage Companion, which means that if you install Vonage Companion on another computer you'll be able to configure your Preferences differently. Simply click File > Preferences from the Vonage Companion Menu then choose one of the options described here.

This section provides a brief overview of each of the configuration options. Refer to the Vonage Companion User Guide for Windows for complete details.

Application

Would you like your Vonage Companion to launch when you boot up your PC? Should a call be placed immediately when you double-click or drag and drop an entry in the My Contacts or My History tab? Where do you want your recorded calls to be stored? Click Application to set up your preferences.

Alerts & Sounds

Vonage Companion gives you control over how you are notified of various calling situations such as incoming calls and call waiting. Click Alerts & Sounds to configure your visual and audible alerts and change your ring tone.
Image
Alerts
Check the "Enable alert displays" checkbox in the Alerts section to have the Call Alert box pop up in different situations, such as to notify you of an incoming call.
Image
Sounds
Check the "Enable sounds" checkbox in the Sounds section to have sounds play in different situations, such as to notify you of an incoming call. Once sounds are enabled, you can separately enable or disable sounds for a variety of actions or "events" and assign specific sounds to each event. For example, if you'd like to have a sound play to notify you of an incoming call and for call waiting but not for hangups, check "For an incoming call" and "For call waiting" then un-check "For hangup." You can then assign specific sounds for an incoming call and for call waiting.
Un-check "Enable sounds" to disable all sounds.
To assign specific sounds for an event, perform the following steps.
  1. Click "Enable sounds" on and check to enable or un-check to disable sounds for each event (incoming call, call waiting, or hangup).
  2. Select (highlight) the individual enabled event then choose the desired sound from the "Sound preference" drop down list. Click Play to preview the sound.
Keep in mind that you can also override any sound for an individual Contact.
Importing WAV files
You can import WAV files to be added to the list of sounds you can choose from when assigning a sound to an action. Click Import and navigate to the desired WAV file stored on your computer.
Use the Play and Stop buttons to listen to a WAV file, and Delete to delete a WAV file from the list.

Quick Transfer

Do you frequently transfer calls to particular phone numbers? If so, Vonage Companion makes your life simple! Click Quick Transfer to set up a list of phone numbers you typically transfer to then select from the list to transfer an on-going call.

Audio Devices

Vonage Companion automatically detects devices each time it starts up and selects the most appropriate audio device. If you would prefer to use a different audio device that you've installed on your computer, click Audio Devices to change the audio device. If you override a selection, it will be honored the next time you start Vonage Companion, unless the device is no longer available, in which case Vonage Companion will again select the device to use.

Headset Mode
Change the Headset Mode fields only if you want to override the devices that Vonage Companion automatically selected for the headset you are using.
The headset is the device that is usually used for audio out (the sound you hear) and audio in (recording your voice). The only situation in which the headset is not used is when the Speaker Phone button is pressed in the Call panel. Therefore, unless you will always be using Vonage Companion in speakerphone mode, you must make a selection here.
Field Description
Speaker
Microphone
Select the headset you are using in both the Speaker and Microphone field.
Speakerphone Mode
Change the Speakerphone Mode fields only if you want to override the devices that Vonage Companion automatically selected for the device you want to use for audio out (the sound you hear) and/or audio in (recording your voice) when the Speaker Phone button is pressed in the Call panel. Typically you'll use the microphone and speaker built in to your laptop when using Speakerphone mode.
Field Description
Speaker
  • Select the device that you want to use for audio out (the sound you hear) when the Speaker Phone button is pressed. Make sure you select a speaker device (not the headset).
  • Select None if you do not have a speakerphone. The Speaker Phone button will be disabled if you select None.
Microphone
  • Select the device that you want to use for audio in (recording your voice) when the Speaker Phone button is pressed.
It can be any microphone: it does not have to be the microphone on the device you specified as the speaker device.
  • Select None if you do not have a speakerphone. The Speaker Phone button will be disabled if you select None.
Reduce background noise Automatically attempts to remove background noise.
You should typically leave this turned on for the speakerphone.
Phone Ring Device
These fields allow you to specify the device where you want to hear the phone ringing, adjust the volume of the ringer and choose whether or not to also ring your PC.
Field Description
Device Change this field only if you want to override the device that Vonage Companion automatically selected.
The device where you want to hear the phone ringing: the headset, the speakerphone, or none.
Volume The volume of the ringer.
Also ring PC speaker Click on or off, to suit your preference.
Volume Control (Windows XP Only)
Change this field only if you want to override the ability for your Vonage Companion to control your computer's master volume setting.
When you limit the Vonage Companion's control of the Window's master volume settings, adjusting the volume on Vonage Companion will not affect other audio applications on your computer.
This option is only supported for Windows XP Operating Systems.

Bandwidth Saver

Bandwidth saver allows you to slightly change the sound quality of your call in order to save valuable bandwidth. If bandwidth is not an issue for you, we suggest you use "Highest Sound Quality" which is the default setting.
Depending on your ISP (Internet Service Provider), you may experience problems or poor quality while using your Vonage Companion due to limited bandwidth of your Internet connection. In this case, you may want to adjust your Vonage Companion sound quality to use a lower bandwidth.
Bandwidth Saver provides three bandwidth settings for your Vonage Companion digital voice calls: Highest, Higher, and Normal Sound Quality. Many people can barely tell the difference between the settings. By adjusting your Vonage Companion sound quality to the lower bandwidth "Higher" setting or the lowest bandwidth "Normal" setting, you can still maintain excellent sound quality while saving bandwidth.
Image
NOTE: Although you can adjust bandwidth via your Online Account, the setting only applies to your home phone. Bandwidth settings affecting Vonage Companion must be adjusted from Preferences and must be set locally for each computer where you download and install Vonage Companion.

Diagnostics

If you're having trouble and a Vonage Customer Care agent asks you to store diagnostics data, click Diagnostics, then check "Enable diagnostic logging". When enabled, vital call information will be stored that can help the agent analyze the problem. The agent will ask you to email them the log file that will be created.
NOTE:There is no need to store diagnostics data unless requested by a Vonage Customer Care agent.
