Vonage Box™ (VDV22/VDV23) Telephone Adapter

The Vonage Box phone adapter connects to your existing broadband internet connection to provide you with Vonage telephone service for up to two phone numbers or a phone number and fax number.

Set Up Your Phone Adapter

Whether you are setting up your adapter for the first time or after a move, make sure your home/office environment has the correct equipment and then follow the setup instructions


Setup Requirements and User Guides

  • High speed broadband internet connection
  • Telephone and telephone cord
  • Ethernet cable that goes from your modem to your computer or router
  • Router, Modem/Router or Router Switch with an open Ethernet (LAN) port



Vonage Box Connection Ports

The ports on the back of the V-Portal are color-coded and a printed icon above each port makes it  easier to set up your V-Portal easier.

NOTE: Phone 2 port is used to connect an additional Vonage phone number or fax number. If you have a single Vonage phone number, you must connect your telephone line to the Phone 1 port as described in the setup instructions.

Setup Instructions

Set up the Vonage Box phone adapter by connecting to your existing modem or existing router as outlined in the Quick Start Guide or by using the following step-by-step instructions.  If you want to use our interactive tool to set up your adapter, see Installation Tool to set up your Vonage Box phone adapter.


Connect to Existing Modem

  1. Unplug the power cord from your existing modem.
  2. Leave your modem connected to your cable or DSL line that supplies your Internet connection.
  3. Unplug the existing Ethernet cable that connects your modem to your computer or router and plug into the yellow Ethernet port on the Vonage Box phone adapter.
  4. Take the Ethernet cable provided by Vonage and connect one end to the blue Internet port on the Vonage Box phone adapter and connect the other end to your modem's Ethernet (LAN) port.
  5. Plug the power cord of your modem back into a power source.
  6. Wait 30 seconds and connect the Vonage Box power supply to the orange Power port and connect the plug end to a power source.
  7. Wait for the Telephone LED on the top of the Vonage Box to turn blue. The LED Phone Line 1 Iconblinks slowly if you have voicemail messages.
  8. Connect your phone cord to the green Phone 1 port on the V-Portal phone adapter. 
  9. Pick up telephone handset and listen for a dial tone.


Connect to Existing Router

  1. Connect the Ethernet cable to your router:
    Available port on router?
    1. Connect one end of the Vonage-supplied Ethernet cable into the blue Internet port on the Vonage Box phone adapter.
    2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable into an unused Ethernet port on your existing router.
    No available port on router?

    Choose to connect to your existing modem or use following steps to free up a port on your router:

    1. Disconnect the existing Ethernet cable from your existing router that connects to your computer and connect that end to the yellow Ethernet port on the back of the Vonage Box phone adapter.
    2. Connect the one end of the Vonage-supplied Ethernet cable to the unused Ethernet port on your existing router and plug the other end into the blue Internet port on your Vonage Box phone adapter.

  2. Connect the Vonage Box power supply to the orange Power port and connect the plug end into a power source.
  3. Wait for the Telephone LED on the top of the Vonage Box to turn blue. The LED Phone Line 1 Iconblinks slowly if you have voicemail messages. 
  4. Connect your phone cord to the green Phone 1 port on the Vonage Box phone adapter. 
  5. Pick up telephone handset and listen for a dial tone.

General Troubleshooting (Voice Response Messages)

If your Vonage Box encounters an error condition, you may be notified when you pick of the handset of a phone that is connected to your phone adapter. Following is a list of these messages, including details on how to resolve.

Solution

Your Vonage device cannot connect to the Internet. Make sure your blue cable is securely plugged into the blue port.
  1. Verify all cables are firmly connected to the correct ports. (Ethernet, Phone, Power)
  2. Verify that the Broadband modem/router is turned on and functioning.
Your Vonage device cannot connect to the Internet. Check to see if your high speed Internet connection is down.

Verify that your Internet connection to your ISP is working.

  • If you have cable service you may need to register the MAC Address with your ISP.
  • If you have DSL service you may need to set up PPPoE.
  • If you are using DHCP, reboot your cable/DSL modem.
Your Vonage device cannot contact the Vonage network.
  • May be caused by a change to network settings. If you have changed your settings, try restarting the devices in your environment.  
  • If you are using Static IP, make certain the IP Address continues to be valid.
This telephone line cannot register to the Vonage network.
  1. Verify with your ISP that they are not blocking the SIP port.
  2. Try to use different SIP port.
  3. Reboot your cable/DSL modem.
  4. Verify that your router is in front of the Vonage device and is not blocking any incoming traffic. Otherwise, disable SIP on your router if it is in front of your Vonage device.
This Vonage line is not yet set up for use and does not have a telephone number assigned to it. If you purchased your Vonage device at a retail store, go to www.vonage.com/retail_subscribe to activate it.
Your phone maybe plugged into the incorrect phone port. Please try the other port. If you believe that you are connected to the correct phone port, please log into your web account to check the status of your service. If you have a single telephone line connected to your Vonage adapter, make sure it is plugged into Phone Port 1.
Your Vonage device has incorrect network settings. Please consult your device user guide.
  • If you have set a static IP address, verify that the Default Gateway and the DNS server address is the IP address of your router. Network issues may be resolved by restarting your equipment.
  • If you have DSL service and have provisioned a PPPoE username/password in the Vonage device, check that your username/password are correct.
Your Vonage device is currently not available to place or receive calls, please hang up and wait. It will be ready momentarily. The Vonage device is in the process of an automatic restart. Wait for the Telephone LED on the top of the Vonage Box to turn blue.
Do Not Disturb is active. Informational message that indicates Do Not Disturb is turned on. You can turn this feature on and off from your telephone keypad or your Online Account.



Restart Your Phone Adapter and Network Devices

Certain conditions can cause an interruption in your Vonage service, such as an internet outage, power outage or change in configuration. Typically, you can resolve these issues by a restart of your network equipment. See Restart Your Phone Adapter and Network Devices for more information.
