Advanced Installation with Firewalls

A firewall is used to control access between two networks. Firewalls can either be hardware (e.g. router, proxy server, a computer host designed to function as a firewall) or software (e.g. products by Zone Alarm, McAfee, Norton). When set up correctly, firewalls control access to and from your network, keeping unauthorized users from gaining access to your network or computers. Firewalls can also, however, cause bottlenecks in data transfer.
Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) is a method used by some firewalls to provide even more security. As data travels through the firewall, SPI examines each packet for information, such as the source IP address, destination IP address, port number, and protocol, to determine if that packet should be blocked or allowed to pass. SPI also prevents certain types of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. A DoS attack is caused by a malicious program that floods a network with meaningless traffic.
Firewalls, especially those employing SPI, can sometimes interfere with your Vonage service. They can prevent your Vonage adapter from registering with our network, produce one-way audio on calls, and block incoming calls. These problems can be avoided two different ways: 1) arrange your network configuration so that the Vonage adapter is located outside of the firewall (see diagrams below), or 2) port forward the Vonage traffic to your Vonage adapter.

NOTE: Moving your Vonage adapter outside of you firewall will not compromise the security of your network.
NOTE: If you use VPN to access the internet, moving your Vonage device outside of your firewall may adversely affect your service. VPN users should instead use port forwarding to fix firewall issues.

Disabling Firewall Settings

Netgear CG814WG or Netgear CG814CCR Cable Modem Gateway

Due to a preconfigured Firewall on the Netgear CG814WG or CG814CCR Cable Modem Gateway, Vonage devices may experience loss of audio during telephone calls. To correct this, the internal firewall on the Netgear CG814WG or CG814CCR must be disabled. Please follow the below instructions for assistance with this issue.
  1. Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to the Netgear CG814WG or CG814CCR.
  2. Type in the IP address http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar of the web browser and press Enter.
  3. Log in to the admin page of the Netgear CG814WG or CG814CCR. The default User ID is admin and password is password. If this does not work please try superuser and password as the User ID and password.
  4. Select the Services tab along the left hand side of the screen.
  5. Uncheck the Firewall Features check-box and click Apply changes at the bottom in order to save the new setting.
NOTE: If the Services or Firewall Features tab does not appear on the left side please contact your Internet Service Provider and request this service to be disabled. Your Internet Service Provider has a more powerful log in that gives them access to hidden features.

To correct this, the internal firewall on the Motorola SBG900/1000 must be disabled. Please follow the below instructions for assistance with this issue.
  1. Launch a web browser from a computer that is connected to the Motorola SBG900 or SBG1000.
  2. Type in the IP address http://192.168.100.1 in the address bar of the web browser and press Enter.
  3. Log in to the admin page of the Motorola SBG1000 or SBG900. The default User ID is admin and password is motorola.
